Oi, oi, oi, it's a long weekend!

Oi, oi, oi, it's a long weekend!

It’s a long weekend across Australia and it’s especially bonza in Geelong and The Bellarine, with a couple of huge events and some other sweet-as ways to make the most of a summer public holiday.

The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race will see the best cyclists in the world hit the streets around Geelong, The Bellarine and Torquay for this UCI-official race. The local lycra warriors get their turn on Saturday morning in the People’s Ride, the women will race the circuit on Saturday afternoon and then the men hit the road on Sunday. There are loads of great vantage points around the track – including Barwon Heads and suburban Geelong – to see these athletes mid-race. The start and finish line is at Steampacket Place on the Geelong waterfront, the most sought-after spectator spot.

As well as bikes going like the wind on the Geelong Waterfront, international sailors will be windward side at the Festival of Sails. There will be plenty of action on the water starting with the passage race from Melbourne on Saturday and gliding right through the whole long weekend.

Whether boats or bikes are your thing, the waterfront will be bustling with activities. There will be entertainment across two stages for the whole three day weekend as part of the Festival of Sails. With one in the Regatta Village and one at Eastern Beach, performances will include Vika & Linda, Taylor Henderson and loads of other acts. Plus a good seat at these locations will put you in a great spot to see the spectacular Saturday night fireworks display.

If you prefer your athletic feats to be achieved on your guts, maybe Adventure Park on Australia Day is for you. The Aqua Racer Championship will award $1,000 to the winner of this wicked waterslide challenge. If you’d rather have your stomach filled than use it as a transport method, head to the event at Oakdene Vineyards – it’s tasty and raising money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The Australia Day long weekend will be easy on the ears. There’s live music is on at venues across the region like Queenscliff Brewhouse, Basils Farm and the Spiegeltent at Barwon Heads (including Mental As Anything on Sunday night!). On Sunday the brand new Furphy Beer Hall at Little Creatures is hosting a Hottest 100 party. We’re tipping Childish Gambino for #1.

Australia Day events on Saturday include celebrations at Rippleside, Portarlington and in Werribee. However you spend your long weekend, have a good one mate!
